Emily Changed Everything

Emily Changed Everything

I am an attorney, but my primary life’s work has been being the mother of 4 children, one of whom has autism. When my daughter Emily, who is now 41, was diagnosed at the age of 4 there was very little information available to us about the disorder. There was no “autism awareness” or “autism acceptance” as there is now. I felt alone and totally overwhelmed and eventually made the difficult decision to stop working so I could devote my time to my family.

Although I had a law degree, I knew nothing about special education law, government entitlements and the rights of individuals with disabilities. There were no websites or Facebook groups, so I had to educate myself by going to conferences and support groups. I contacted government agencies for information on the law and how to obtain services. When other parents began to ask me for assistance I decided I would  start my own practice which would focus on representing individuals with disabilities and their families.

As parents and caregivers of children with special needs we have to constantly navigate various systems and bureaucracies in order to obtain (and fight for) services for our kids. We also have to think of the future. Will our children be able to live independently as adults, or will they need additional support?

As Emily transitioned into adulthood I had to become proficient in guardianship law, government benefits, and special needs planning to ensure her safety, health and well being. Emily now lives in a group home that she loves and goes to a day program during the week. She has a very rich life and we have taken all the necessary steps so that her future is secure.

Because I have had to deal with all of these issues and navigate through the system  as a parent I am able to use my own experience to help my clients do the necessary planning that will ensure that their child will be well cared for throughout their life.
